Alexandra Coombe: Fashion It Girl

I recently interviewed Alexandra Coombe, a vibrant, goal oriented woman who I had the pleasure of going to High School with.

In my mind, Alexandra should be on every watch list of rising fashionistas. She has amazing style (always has), and she has goals that I have no doubt she will achieve, while wearing great shoes of course!

Check out the interview with Alex below, and make sure to check out her photos too!

1. Tell us a little about yourself and where you live

Moved to the city from a little farming community for school just over 5 years ago and instantly fell in love with the urban lifestyle. I was attending the Glendon Campus of York University for French and Sociology but after a year of introductions to different areas of Toronto’s Art scene I decided to take a break from school and take a shot at pursuing and exploring some more creative endeavors. I get my thrills from any form of artistic expression but fashion seems to be the area I can use my creativity to the fullest. This past year I moved to the heart of downtown in the Art district and the diversity of ethnicities creates a beautiful and unique multicultural mosaic which allows for consistent artistic inspiration. I love it!

2. What are your greatest passions?

I love anything adventurous or spontaneous. I’d have to say travel is definitely at the top of my list, though, at this stage of my life. Exploration really broadens my perspective on the world and also influences my creative experimentation.

3. How did you first get interested in fashion and why is it important to you?
I think it may have started with the artistic lifestyle I was leading from a very young age. I figure skated and danced competitively and the different costumes were always such an exciting element for me. As I began high school, I started to experiment with different styles and it became a very pragmatic way of expressing myself on a daily level, I guess.

4.Describe your personal style and its influences/inspirations
My style varies but lately I’d say it’s been a haute –hippie/retro-boho look. I like to keep my look authentic and I live by, as coined by Coco Chanel, “style without sacrifice” so being comfortable is necessary.

5.Favorite designers and places to shop?
If I had the luxury of affording high end designer clothing I would probably invest in Stella McCartney- I love the way she embodies feminism and romanticism in her collections and I have always been one for lace. On my edgier days I would probably splurge on Alexander Wang or Vivienne Westwood. I also really admire Nicolas Kirkwood’s masterpieces for Rodarte’s footwear line.

6.The first thing you notice in someone else's outfit?
Authenticity. I respect anyone rocking their own style.

7. What do you splurge on fashion wise?

I’ll really only invest in trend-proof staples. Spending big bucks on trendy fashion will only leave me with a cluttered closet with last season’s washouts and a skimpy wallet.

8. What is your next "must have" item?
A gold snake upper arm cuff. I’ve been looking for one for a while now but have yet to come across just the right one.

9. Are there any fashion icons or people you admire in your life? And why do you admire them?

I wouldn’t even know where to start. My family, my friends- everyone in my life offers some form of beautiful and unique creativity. As far as fashion icons that really influence my style from day to day, I really admire Edie Sedjwick, Rachel Zoe, Bridget Bardot and Cher’s 60/70’s look.

10. Your future ambitions in the fashion world?
Start my own label maybe eventually even brand management consulting. Anything where I can be involved in conceptualizing creative projects while having independence to do what I want with whatever moves me would be ideal.

11. What fashion school do you plan on attending?

I plan on finishing up my undergrad in the Arts and then I’ll likely apply to George Brown’s International Fashion Management Post Grad program.

12. What would you say to someone seeking fashion advice?

When in doubt, keep it simple. Accent with unique or colorful accessories but stay true to yourself. A contrived style is so transparent and the most exciting part of fashion is self expression!

13. Your must have/essential beauty items? And your morning routine to looking fabulous?

I like to experiment with different looks but right now I’m generally practicing the “less is more” theory so my matte bronzer has been my best friend. I also always try to keep some mascara and lip gloss handy to polish my look off. If I’m going for a sexier evening look, smoky shadows or a bold lipstick are always key for revving up a day time look.

14.There are so many different textures, shapes, and colors in this world - what is the magical combination of these elements that make an outfit "work" for you?

I really don’t have the magical formula for this question. I think it’s just whatever feels right when I get dressed in the morning. My outfit is generally pretty consistent with my attitude.

15. A fashion rule you never break
Fashion shouldn’t have any rules, in my opinion. Maybe just avoid head to toe animal print unless it’s a Halloween costume.

16. What's on your iPod / bookshelf / DVD player at the moment?

I definitely don’t discriminate when it comes to different genres of music. I’ll listen to anything but lately my “Recently Played” playlist has had a lot of dubstep, electronica and indie-rock. I’m reading Eckhart Tolle’s newest publication “A New Earth” (currently my favourite New age spiritual guru) and I love watching any comedy or thriller on DVD.

17. What is the ultimate showpiece in your closet?
I love my vintage fur coat I inherited from a friend about a year ago. It’s pretty beat up but I’m not quite ready to give it up.

18. How are you going to change the fashion world as we know it? (or contribute to it?)

I’m just going to continue to create and be unique. Expressing myself through my clothing and adding to the fashion canvas we all paint together.

19. What events have you taken part in?

Dabbled in a bit of modeling for a few designer friends and other photographers in the fashion industry. I’ve also had the opportunity to get some experience styling for different creative shoots. Most recently I was involved in the backstage production at F.A.T. (Fashion. Art. Toronto., Toronto’s alternative fashion week) coordinating and styling the runway. I also attend LG Fashion week most seasons.

20. How do you spend most of your time?
Hanging out at different cafes around the city. Whether it’s just me, my Ipod and my journal or meeting up with friends, I just can’t seem to get enough of it. I love the relaxed and casual vibe that really aids in the cultivation of inspiration for me.

21. Do you go shopping at thrift stores? If yes, what are the best ones in your area to go to?
I love vintage shopping. I live right around the corner from Kensington Market which is chalk full of amazing finds. I also frequent Value Village when I’m feeling up to the challenge.
