Interview with Breakfast with Fashion's Breanne Gratton

Last December I had the pleasure of interviewing a fellow fashion blogger, Breanne Gratton of Breakfast with Fashion. Her interview last year was so refreshing, that she was on the top of my list of bloggers to interview again this year. A lot can change in a year! Check out last years interview with Breanne.

Tell us about yourself, what you do and where you live.

I recently graduated the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communication with a Bachelor’s of the Arts in magazine journalism. Since then I have relocated to Portland, Oregon, where I am working full-time to pay my bills, blogging, and working as the Social Media and Outreach Coordinator for Lauren Stucky Designs—a high-end fashion designer based in Los Angeles.

My social media links are as follows: Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram (BreanneGratton)

How do you describe the fashion scene where you live in comparison to other fashion capitals? As an individual stylesetter, does your personal style get you recognized in your home town?

The IFC show Portlandia really does put the style of Portland on display. It is very much hipster-based in the area I live and work, where the top accessory seems to be a bike. It is definitely not the style of New York or London but it does have its own aesthetic. My style is motivated by who I am and the world, art, fashion, and people I take inspiration from. I will say when I wear leather and an oversized fur I do get looks in Portland.

Tell us about your shoe/clothing/accessories collection.
My collection is currently in a transitional phase (this rings true for many aspects of my life). It has a foundation of most-loved items (fur, leather, white tees, smoking slippers, well-cut skirts) and built up from there. I have a lot of black, white, and grey pieces with an attention to detail, fit, cut, and draping.

Tell us something most people don’t know about you.
It is rare that I will lose a game of Scattergories. I also drink 2-4 cups of coffee a day.

If you could go back in time, to any date when/where would you go and why?
There are so many time periods I would go back to. However, I would love to go back in time and go to Truman Capote’s Black and White Ball on November 28, 1966. Truman Capote is a great source of inspiration for me from Breakfast at Tiffany’s (which he wrote after meeting Coco Chanel) to In Cold Blood, the man is fascinating and that ball looked beyond glam.

Social Media is prominent in the fashion world, with fashionista’s using not only Facebook and Twitter but now Pinterest  and so many others as well. What are your favorite social media accounts to follow and why?

Eva Chen, former Beauty Editor at Teen Vogue, is a social media slice of awesome. She is such a great source of information and inspiration. Amy Levin of CollegeFashionista is wonderful. Her style and her sense of self is so refreshing. I also adore the TEXTILE Elizabeth and James and Elizabeth and James accounts. They have great behind the scenes photos and are highly engaging with their audience, which I find great on social media.

Describe “Breakfast with Fashion”
Breakfast with Fashion is a site infused with my own passion, inspiration, and aesthetic through outfit collages, writing, editorials, and photography.

This morning you:
Wake up, brush my teeth, mess up my hair, put on little makeup, drink Emergen-C, and go get coffee before work.

What is your go-to beauty regimen? What products do you use?
Some people have great skills with makeup, hair, and beauty—I am not one of those people. I use Cetaphil face wash, Aveeno moisturizer, Chanel eye cream, and then I cover blemishes and maybe use some black eyeliner and/or brown eyeshadow with mascara. I am a less is more girl. I recently cut my hair short (inspired by Daria Werbowy) and got it cut so it is naturally messy and works with my messy wave texture, so I don’t do much to it at all. I find if I have clear skin and am taking my vitamins and eating well/exercising, things just work out better.

A healthy lifestyle is very important. What do you do to stay healthy? (Exercises, favorite foods, favorite drinks)
I recently just started on a diet and weight loss challenge. As someone who wasn’t born to stay at 90 pounds, it is a bit tough. I find eating more fruits and veggies, with water and Neuro drinks helps me stay on track. I also take a ton of vitamins. I love chicken with spice. I’m all for spice! As for my exercises, I don’t have time for the gym, so I do Michael Jackson dancing for Wii, and yoga, as well as walking a ton. I will say I’m so jealous of those with access to Soul Cycle.

What is your next “must have” purchase?
A great coat. I’m loving the long biker/military-inspired coats and I think one of them has to make my way soon.

What is the ultimate showpiece in your closet?
All of my fur coats

What’s on your playlist, bookshelf, and DVD player at the moment?
Currently reading: The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration by Isabel Wilkerson, which chronicles the history of the migration of African Americans from the South to the North and West from 1915 to the 1970s.

Currently listening: Pearl Jam

Currently watching: A lot of Grey’s Anatomy as well as a lot of reality TV. In my Netflix Queue has a lot of classic movies. Even as a kid, I’ve always loved classic movies. The best new movie I have seen is Perks of Being a Wallflower and I am planning on going to the Diana Vreeland documentary.

How do you choose what to wear each day?
Everything I own fits into my personal style and is highly versatile. I always think about what I am going to be doing that day and where I am going to be. I think about layers and details. I usually think about what I will wear before bed so I can sleep longer but really I schedule and organize everything.

What can’t you live without?
Coffee, leather, fur

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I’m not quite sure. I like to visualize my ideals and then figure out how to get there from the present moment.

Next place you want to travel to and why?
Paris because it looks absolutely beautiful and so aesthetically chic.

What would you say to someone seeking general fashion advice?
Pay attention to tailoring, draping, and fabrics. Always dress for yourself, your body, and your style.

Favorite Quote.
“There’s blood beneath every layer of skin.” — Lee Alexander McQueen

It’s time for Starbucks, what’s your regular order? Does it change when they have the special holiday drinks?
I’ve just had to switch with my diet so I go with a venti skinny vanilla latté extra hot or just a latté. I do love a good peppermint mocha.

What is your everyday routine?
It really varies on the day. No two days are alike.

What inspired you want to start a blog?
I was in college and really bored on holiday break so I wanted to do something with all the Kate Moss images I was looking at and thus BWF was born. Since it has transformed and has continued to grow with me.

What colour best describes your personality and why?
“Women think of all colors except the absence of color. I have said that black has it all. White, too. Their beauty is absolute. It is the perfect harmony”
— Coco Chanel

What makes you stand out from the rest of the crowd?
Confidence, a sense of myself, a sense of my style—and attitude

What is your dream of happiness?
To be working and happy

What is your favorite flower?
Peony or white rose

Who are your favorite heroines of fiction?
Scout Finch

What do you do in your spare time?
I love reading with a glass of wine.

What’s your motto?
Live with passion and intuition and work your ass off for both

What do you immediately scan for when you go into a clothes shop? What are you drawn to?
Fur and white tees, to be honest. I don't shop that often. I more online shop. A well cut piece of outerwear, leather leggings your pour yourself into, a crisp white tee, and of course shoes.

Do you speak other languages or just English?

In high school I took French and in college I took Spanish. I speak neither.

Do you ever just feel uninspired or lazy and just hang out in tracksuit pants, your boyfriends jumper and your hair in a messy ponytail? Or are you always 'done up' if you know what I mean

That sounds like every Sunday. I am really low-key at times and will go to the grocery store in my glasses, fitted sweat pants, wedge booties, and a leather jacket. My hair is always messy and is cut to be that way. But yes, I think everyone has lazy days.

Name 7 things that are always in your fridge?

I don't think I even have 7 things in my fridge. 2 Brita pitchers full of water, probiotics, yogurt, cheese, cilantro, garlic. In my freezer, a bottle of Pearl vodka.

How has your taste in fashion, especially favourite designers, changed over time?

Yes, of course. I think that is only natural. Your style changes with you and transforms over time. I have had many "stages" and have grown out of them to become unequivocally me. I take inspiration from the runway and trends, but I don't let them dictate what I will and won't wear.

Is there anything that horrifies you about what you loved at 15, or is it just that your taste has got broader / more sophisticated from there?

Yes, most things I was into and how I dressed when I was 15 mortifies me to my core. I have a broad interest in things but my style is more refined.

What do you consider the five staples of any girl's wardrobe?
White tee shirt, leather leggings, fur coat, a well fitted blazer, pointed toe pumps

What's your karaoke song?
I can't sing! I stay oh-so-far away from karaoke.

Your wardrobe is going up in flames, you can only save one thing, what would you save?
My Alexander McQueen ring because it means so much to me.

How do your organize your wardrobe with so many clothes/shoes/accessories?
Pants, skirts, no sleeves, short sleeves, long sleeves, dresses and all are organized by color

What is on your Christmas wishlist this year?
Leather, smoking slippers, books, perfume

Do you think starting a fashion/style blog is a good way to introduce or wean yourself into the fashion industry? And do you have any tips or advice on style/fashion blogging?
I was already interested in the industry before I started BWF. When it comes to blogging, find what is lacking and what you are passionate about. Follow your intuition.

How did you choose "Breakfast with Fashion" for the title of your blog?
I love Breakfast at Tiffany's—it is my all-time favorite movie, so it is a play on that. Plus, breakfast has always been on the top of my food list.

What's in your purse?
Wallet, credit card, ID, Hempz lip balm, a pen, an epi pen, iPad, iPhone, keys, vintage cigarette case with business cards, a book, a lighter

Where you got your inspiration for the creative side of your blog (font, colour, design).
I switch it up from time to time. Currently the background is black fur due to my love of fur. The banner was made by a college friend. I only design with and post items and images I love. The design and layout of the blog is all my aesthetic and things that fit into that aesthetic.

Finally, what’s the one question you wish people asked you but you’ve never had the opportunity to answer? (And what is the answer?)

Any life advice?
Learn to have a sense of humor early on and never stop looking for knowledge.

And now moving to some personal photos of Breanne's closet and most favorite things!
I survive with this Chanel curler and this is one of my favorite mascaras

A note from Lindsay at Elizabeth and James. I now have it hanging on a mirror in my apartment

One of my favorite moisturizers I keep on my sink. Also a photo of myself and my grandpa who passed away my senior year of high school. I love being able to see him smiling every morning when I'm getting ready. Truly one of the best men to walk this planet.

I have SUCH an addiction to coffee table fashion books. On my other table I have Alexander McQueen Savage Beauty, Audrey Hepburn, The World of Gloria Vanderbilt, and more!

What's that lame thing people always said about their beds on MTV Cribs? This is where the magic happens? Well, this is where my a big portion of my life happens
