I think I own more red than any other colour.

Well, maybe that's an exaggeration, but I am definitely a "rouge" fan.

This outfit was inspired by Taylor @ Live Love Chardonnay! Her style is impeccable. Make sure to check her out on Instagram - her stories are so cute! I'd love to start incorporating more "Girl Power" in my posts by sharing other ladies blogs and Instagram accounts! Stay tuned for more.

DIY Rosewater Toner

DIY Rosewater Toner

It can take years to find something that works well for your skin. I am almost 30, and it has taken me years to find out what really works for me.

99.9% of products I use on my face are handmade, vegan and all natural.

I enjoy making my own scrubs and soaps and will be sharing all my personal recipes for beauty here on The Brunette Shake.

This past weekend I spent some time making my rose water. It's super easy and only has 3 ingredients (sometimes 4).

1. Three cups of rose petals
2. Three cups of water
3. Teaspoon of witch hazel oil (and/or rosehip oil or any oil you may LOVE for your skin)

You boil the water and rose petals for about 7 minutes. After it boils I like to let it steep for about 15 minutes, sometimes even 30 minutes if I forget about it and get distracted.

Drain the mixture

Add witch hazel

Pour your mixture into mason jars.

Ta da!

Ces't fini. It's that easy! This DIY toner has worked well on my skin for years. There are so many variations of rose water, you can even add vodka (which works really well if you have oily skin)

Sometimes the closest I can get to my dream places are in the pages of a book.

Chapters is my place to explore travel books.

I actually discovered the most wonderful book called "Wanderful" which is a bohemian travel guide. I absolutely fell in love!

I can spend hours wandering the book stores.

Next stops on the #HGSWorldTour :

My nickname in high school was Clementine, so when I discovered there was a local cafe with the same name I jumped at the chance to go there.

It was super whimsical inside, with quirky and fun details.

The coffee was amazing!

I wore my favourite new Zara suit with a pearly beret from Free People. The pearl necklace is vintage, and was a hand me down/heirloom from my Nanny. I felt like an 80's student going to art school in this outfit, and I absolutely loved it.

Also - sidenote, do you know how difficult it is to take a photo holding a coffee cup? My hands looked like man hands.

The coffee art was the best in town, and we had such a wonderful time.

Self loves comes in many different forms.

I am very excited to film and share Self Love Chronicles on my YouTube channel! I will be posting every Thursday.

For me, on a dreary and snowy Monday morning I decided to give myself a treat. My favourite actress was covering a fashion magazine (Natalie Portman on Porter Magazine for Spring '18) and it is maple season (my favourite) so I treated myself to a delicious maple latte from Second Cup Canada.

Prince Edward Island is my home away from home.

It actually feels more like home than where I currently live! It is bright and cheery, and filled with delights at every corner.

I recently discovered a little cafe and restaurant called "Leonhard's". The interior had mystical little details at every glance. There was angel wings and dried roses hanging from the ceiling... it was really a fun little spot to enjoy some multigrain waffles and a vanilla latte!

Whenever I wear blue jeans, I always sing that Lana Del Rey song in my head. You know the one I mean.

I am absolutely in LOVE with this denim jacket. It was my Mom's from the 90's and I vividly remember her wearing it when I was a child. I was on the fence about this H&M shirt. It turns out that I just needed to size down for it to fit me better. I usually wear a size 10/12 at H&M depending on the fit of course. For this shirt I was a size 6 or a size 8. So you're best to size down one or two sizes. I still have an oversized feel to the look which is great!

I have been really into styling my hair and neck with vintage scarves like Parisian women have been doing for decades. This scarf went really well with my blue look, and made my hair look undone, yet chic.

Do you style with scarves?

When I started this blog, I came up with "The Brunette Shake" because I am Brunette and like to shake things up. My blog space has been a work in progress - and now is almost complete! I have sent over 800 of my old posts dated from 2009-2015 to the "drafts" for a fresh start.

When I saw Noelle Downing and Rachel Martino wearing these Brunette/Blonde sweaters from Zara I knew I had to have one.

It's definitely a statement piece. I received a size Medium, and could have had a Small or Extra Small. It is very oversized, but comfortable. It's great for those days when you don't know what to wear, but it's chilly out.

It was a windy day, but these tulips made me the happiest. Spring is almost here!

 What's your favourite season?

I consistently burn my tongue on food. Today, it was pizza. The pizza was so delicious that it was WORTH IT.

I know this coat is so bright it can be seen from space - but I felt like sunshine/a chicken/tweety bird/big bird and I kind of loved it. I also was saying in my head all day “sunshine daisies, butter mellow, turn this stupid fat rat yellow” - if you know what book/movie that is from we should be best friends.

I would travel far and wide for a delicious strawberry milkshake. Thankfully, I only had to go 10 minutes down the street from my house!

With my two youngest siblings in tow, we ordered three retro style strawberry, vanilla and chocolate milkshakes to share.

The jukebox was playing, photos of vintage cars and Marilyn/James Dean/Elvis on every surface - I was in heaven.

I have always been inspired by the 50's and 60's so this diner was right up my alley.

Unique and abstract photography is one of my favourite things. I love to frame black and white photos and display them in different coloured frames all around my home. I am inspired by nature, fashion and happiness. By happiness, I mean photos filled with laughter and love.

I enjoy making use of my photos by creating unique invitations and cards, or crafting with decoupage. Licking a stamp, and popping a card into the mailbox is one of my favourite things to do.

I have always been a fan of mail that makes people happy. A fun card, a beautifully written anecdote.. I know that when they receive the card it makes them smile.

People are always connected. Connected to their laptops, tablets and smart phones. This makes it easy to contact via text message - but why not email a sweet card? It's quick, easy and you have so many colourful options for every occasion or celebration. This is also an environmentally friendly way to send cards/invites/save the dates to your loved ones!

Paperless Post has the most gorgeous options from a variety of designers. Kate Spade, Oscar de la Renta, Sugar Paper and Mr. Boddington's Studio... You can send Thank You cards, Wedding Invitations, Cocktail Party invites - and so much more. I have at least 50 cards "saved" for a rainy day, to send for my upcoming 30th birthday, my future baby shower. Basically, if you can imagine it you can find it on Paperless Post.

Check out some of my favourite cards below from my collaboration with Paperless Post

My love for Paris and all things Parisian have no bounds. I am a woman in love with the idea of a life in Paris, filled with Parisian delights.

I was able to find a sliver of Paris at Tony's Bistro and Patisserie in Moncton, NB! Only a short 11 minute drive from my house, where I was able to drink the most delicious latte, and share the most scrumptious desserts with my favourite little sister.  I think this just might be my new favourite place!

My Travel Diary | Philippines 2017 & 2018

My Travel Diary | Philippines 2017 & 2018

2017 has been one for the books. I was able to adventure half way across the world for work with Asurion for 3 weeks to the Philippines and I absolutely adored it. We left on June 16th and came back on July 7th.

Our initial flights there went a little like this :
Moncton > Toronto > Hong Kong > Manila, PH

Our return flight :
Manila, PH > Tokyo, Japan > Toronto > Moncton

The flights were fun and definitely a great experience. We had the sleeping "pods" on our 16 hour flight between Toronto and Hong Kong and we flew over Nunavut and saw some amazing ice bergs! The food on the Air Canada flights were so delicious and they had great movie and TV options too. I watched "Table 19" and laughed so hard.

On the return flights I actually slept for 12 hours on the long flight and missed all the goodness. I had barely any sleep in PH and I think I caught up on it on the flight back.

In Hong Kong I fell in love with a girl's yellow raincoat and it was all I could think about it. I also purchased the cutest Mickey Mouse Paris tote bag from Hong Kong DisneyLand.

When we landed in Manila, it was a definite culture shock. People from every which way trying to get us into their taxi cabs. Thankfully, after being firm with my "no" and finding our shuttle to the hotel - we were on our way to Nuvali, Santa Rosa Laguna where we spent majority of our time.

We stayed at Seda, Nuvali and it was such a cute and fun hotel. It was a minute walk away from our offices, and had great food and a pool. My room was 823 - on the 8th floor way at the top. I had a great view of the lagoon, shopping and nature. One evening there was a crazy thunder and lightening storm and I was able to capture some video/photos from my open hotel window. I had a group of Australian's staying on my floor and it was so fun to connect and listen to their accents.

I was in awe the entire trip and soaked up as much as I could. I became addicted to mango, dried mango and croissants. As well as DIY pina colada's - It's fresh blended pineapple, with a shot or two of malibu coconut rum. We had quite the experience with food and drinks while there. Filipino's eat everything - I mean everything. Our Filipino friends brought us to "Gerry's" in Manila and they gave us mystery dishes to try. I did not adventure with this at all. I stuck to the plain rice and refused to eat anything else. I discovered a strange looking hair in my food and it turned me off completely. So I ate my plain rice and drank Mango smoothie's. Turned out that hairy dish was pig head and I have never been so glad I didn't try something before. We also became regulars at the local Starbucks around the corner from the hotel. They called me "Anastasia Alberta" because they thought I looked like Anastasia Steele from Fifty Shades of Grey, which I have heard so many times! It was pretty funny though - they would write Anastasia on my cup and knew my order by heart. I became addicted to Americano's with a shot of hazelnut and two brown sugar. It's like my go-to coffee now!

I met some really wonderful people on my visit and hope someday to return!

I climbed Taal Volcano and was the first of my group to reach the crater. It was gorgeous. There were yellow butterflies all around me, and it was worth the 3 hour hike. It was not an easy feat! 3 people from my group of 5 didn't make it to the top and had to turn around. It felt like a definite bucket list moment when I got there and had no issue paying extra for the professional photos at the top. Our guide was fantastic, she explained everything and helped so much. She took photos on our journey and made us feel comfortable.

We also went to Green Hills Market in Manila. Green Hills is where a lot of people can buy replica handbags and shoes - I avoided this and went straight for the locally made goods. I purchased pearls, turquoise and coral necklaces, handwoven purses and bread baskets. I tried to purchase a jade bracelet but I couldn't get it on my wrist. A lot of Filipino's are quite small - I don't have a large wrist either so I was very sad I couldn't get a beautiful jade bracelet. One of the vendors tried to force one on my wrist and it got stuck on a bone - it was not fun. On our Green Hills adventure we also stopped at Starbucks where I spilled my Nick's Juice from Australia all over Kelly. I had been drinking these juices daily, and one day I purchased 3 of them and they were in a paper bag and one started to leak. My comment when the juice was leaking down my leg was "Am I peeing myself or is it raining?" I didn't even think that it was green juice all over my legs. It was a hysterical and classic Hillary moment. We actually went to Green Hill's twice. The second time we stopped at a cute little french inspired restaurant and I was able to (finally!) find Parisian Macaron. I bought 60 of them. SIXTY. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner and had a 5 hour drive back to our hotel in back to back traffic. This is the trip that gave me such a kink in my neck that I couldn't turn my head to the left.

I was able to farm dragon fruit and pineapples, visit the best restaurants (Bag of Beans and Classic Confections) and live my best life in the Philippines!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For my second trip, it was a lot more casual. We didn't have close to as much fun as the first trip! I was luckily able to revisit a couple of my favourite restaurants and eat enough salmon that I am probably 50% fish now. I enjoyed copious amounts of fresh mango juice, which was a definite plus. On my first trip I had a support network the entire time, and on the second trip I mostly was alone and kept to myself which is strange for me - but nonetheless, enjoyable.

I was able to visit Classic Confections three times and I ate the most delicious cakes and drank the best caramel mocha I've ever had. My hair was big and curly, and I got a little bit of a tan which was nice. I was able to adventure to Batangas and see the beach. It was glorious. I was born a beach baby, and forever will be a beach bum - so it was no surprise that I didn't go into the pool once and stayed on the lovely beach. I found coral, and filled up a water bottle full of sand. It was delightful.

I only had 2 weeks in the PH this round, but I always cherish the opportunity for worldwide travel. It has started a fire within me to travel each year. I've already been to NYC in December 2017, and I plan on going back in April, 2018. Plus a trip to Paris in June! What places are on your bucket list?

17 Wonderful Things That Happened in 2017

17 Wonderful Things That Happened in 2017
December 27, 2017
Read post
It's the Chrimbo Limbo and I sincerely don't know what way is up and it feels like a Tuesday and I feel like I should be working but I'm watching Me Before You in flannel pajamas in front of the fireplace at 230PM and I'm not mad about it. This is my best life.

Current struggles include lacking the will to get dressed, should I move or shouldn't I move, I need to go to Paris and I also need to eat something but the kitchen is too far away from the couch. I also am trying to figure out my life and complete an essay that I really don't want to complete because it's 2017 and I haven't written an essay since 2009. I am craving apple, cheese and cinnamon bread sandwiches as well as banana pudding from Magnolia Bakery (still grieving the fact that the TSA at the airport took my pudding and threw it in the garbage).

I figured in my current state that it is a good time to reflect on the past year and my shenanigans.

1. I went to the Philippines for 3 weeks

This trip was a *once in a lifetime but can I please go back* type of adventures. I explored, and did so much outside of my comfort zone while we were there. The nights were days and the days were nights for us, and I was also living in the future technically, so I lived without regret. I climbed Taal volcano. I farmed dragonfruit. I pretended to try weird and exotic food. I became obsessed with dried mango slices. I chased giant bullfrogs. I visited a pineapple plantation. I ate in a waterfall. I found my dream house, it was pink and white and perfect. I ate specialty coffees from the best cafe. I bought a rainbow Kate Spade dress. I ate rice out of a banana tree leaf. I went to a *fingers only* dining experience.

2. I went to NYC at Christmastime (my Blair Waldorf/Carrie Bradshaw life)

I travelled to New York City in December from the 9th-13th. It was magnificent. I went with my Mom and my sister, Olivia. We stayed in Brooklyn, at the Bed and Bagel airbnb. We ate NYC bagels every morning for breakfast.  We took the subway everywhere. We also got separated on the Subway. Got lost in SoHo. Saw the Rockefeller Christmas Tree. Went to Top of the Rock. Went to Times Square. Drank Brooklyn beer. Shopped on the Upper West Side. Went to Cafe Lalo. Went to Serendipity3 for frozen hot chocolate. Checked out the Christmas windows at Bloomingdales. Went to the Brooklyn Bridge in Dumbo. Went to Bryant Park and I burnt my tongue on apple cider. Saw the Empire State Building. Became addicted to Magnolia Bakery Banana Pudding. Bought too many hats. Shopped till we dropped.

3. Work Accomplishments

This has definitely been an interesting year in terms of my growth at work. By work, I mean my job aside from blogging and Instagram. I received an award for Employee of the Year. I got the Shining Star Award (voted by peers). I received the Content Design award from by boss for designing creative *stuff*. I went to the Philippines to launch a new line of business. I got a promotion.

4. Personal Growth

I feel like 2017 was a year of personal growth for me. I've never felt more confident in myself and my abilities. I feel like I really know, and love, myself. I think it's a combination of travelling, spending quality time by myself... I also got over being jealous. I mean, why be jealous of someone or something someone has when YOU are wonderful just as you are? There's no point. Like Dr. Seuss said - there's no one youer than you.

5. Box Series Life

In 2017 I think I watched the entire Friends season over 5 times. That's not an exaggeration. I strongly dislike life without Friends playing in the background. Phoebe is definitely my spirit animal, and I really wish I could find her faux fur orange coat sometime. I may or may not have just spent 47 minutes on Etsy looking for this coat.

6. Gilmore Girls is the Love of my LIFE

2017 is the year of me finding Gilmore Girls finally and watching it everyday all day until the seasons were all done and then restarting it because I love Lorelei. Also have a feeling that I am the Lorelei to my sister, Olivia and she is Rory.

7. Priorities

This was the year of the realization that I am in fact almost 30 (internal sigh). Which means that I needed to concentrate more on getting ahead in life. Saving money (yuck), not buying that 500$ Gucci Belt (brb crying) and making sacrifices to better my personal future. While I type this I am daydreaming of a faux fur black headband and an orange tweed winter jacket. Ugh I guess I'll pay my credit card bill instead. *face meet palm*

8. Banished Jealousy
I already mentioned this but it was a big deal for me in 2017. I don't get jealous at all anymore and I understand it is a normal human emotion, but I really was able to not compare myself to others and their growth and just concentrate on me. I feel like Instagram is amazing but also dreadful, because I follow accounts and will see a woman's style or outfit and *need* to have it. When the reality is I don't need it. I already have the same beret a shade lighter. And just because the style is cool and lovely doesn't mean it's *me*. Working on that Hillary brand!

9. Smoothie Life Style
I love smoothies. This past year I experimented with delicious smoothies with all sorts of crazy ingredients. My favourite I call "green monster". It's insane. But lovely all at the same time. I even bought a new Kitchenaid yellow blender. She's beautiful.

10. Winning Skin Care
It took me a really long time to realize that skin care is really quite simple. It's washing your face. It's moisturizing. Although my secret skin care is not washing my face with soap or cleanser. It's something that I've noticed drastic results in my skin. I haven't washed with a soap or cleanser on my face for over 3 years. I use coconut oil or my homemade coffee brown sugar scrub. I haven't had a breakout, I don't have wrinkles. My skin doesn't feel dry. I feel like I won skin care. Until this year I found a motherload of facial oils that are all natural. My skin glows. Looks amazing and so healthy! I should probably do a YouTube video on this..

11. Decluttered
I literally gave away or sold garbage bags full of clothing. I went through my library of books and donated boxes full. I sold art pieces that really weren't my style. I've never felt so free! And also now I have more storage for coats which are my true love.

12. Victorian Home Life
I always wanted to live in a Victorian house. I still do! I love the details of an old home. They're quirky and amazing. I lived in a two bedroom apartment of a Victorian home. It was the second level of the house. The house was olive green and had a huge oak tree out front. Everything had wood detailing and was painted white with yellow walls. The bathroom was Robin's Egg blue. I had a small kitchen, and the entire house screamed "Hillary". Until I had to move out. It might seem all roses, but it wasn't. There was what one can only assume was a brothel across the street, and there was a hole under my sink in the kitchen that mice were getting in through. See gals, even though the outside is perfection there's distress on the inside. It's the same with life & people! I moved out of the mouse house, but I really do miss it if I'm being honest. Don't miss the police outside my house every other night though.

13. Personal Style
I really embraced my personal style this year. I wore colourful outfits. Polka dot coats. Weird and brightly coloured hats. Accessories that reminded me of Iris Apfel. I really just found what I loved and went with it. It doesn't matter what other people think. Style is a form of self expression. I expressed my way to over 8000 followers on Instagram.

14. #MakeupFree
In 2015/2016 I thought I needed to wear fake eyelashes and be like Jaclyn Hill to be pretty and accepted. That's so not true gang! I go makeup free all the time now and I love it so much. When I do wear makeup I never wear foundation and I don't contour. I do a warm eye look and minimal lip product, or mascara and a bold lip. I also am no longer a Sephora Rouge member. When I got that card in 2016 I was both ashamed and excited (weird mix) that I spent over 1000$ at Sephora in a calendar year. Again, priorities. I do find it fundamentally difficult not to order every palette every beauty guru says is a "must have". But I'm working on it! Very interested in keeping things clean and environmentally friendly. Top of my list for makeup - No testing on animals.

15. Baking Queen
I got a Kitchenaid mixer for my birthday. It's not yellow, but I think I may paint it. It's black and badass. I use it for everything. I definitely won baking queen of the year. Also cooking. I am amazing in the kitchen. It kind of shocks me because like 3 years ago if you asked me to cook/bake something it would be out of a box and now I am really excelling in the kitchen. My brown sugar fudge is mouthwatering, my banana pudding is great (not as good as Magnolia Bakery but I used their recipe!), I can decorate cakes... This year I am concentrating on PIES. I need to up my pie game.

16. Dakota
This year was all about people thinking I was Dakota Johnson/Anastasia Steele. It happened at work. It happened at the grocery store. It happened in NYC. It even happened at Starbucks in the Philippines. Meagan at work calls me Dakota. It's a thing. I dig it.

17. Dancing Queen/Bend n' Snap
This year I decided to go back to Danceast and restart Perfect Fit dance classes and practice Yoga at home. I was able to do my first headstand unsupported and really gained back some flexibility that I lost. I'm going to continue both of these in 2018, I really love to dance and stretch.

Take Me to the Pumpkin Patch

Take Me to the Pumpkin Patch
October 11, 2017
Read post
A slow, bumpy tractor ride brought us deep into a farmers field where we were able to find a wonderful assortment of pumpkins.

Personally, I like to pick the pumpkins that are perfect. But also the pumpkins that have imperfections that usually people don't gravitate towards. I like them because they are unique, and they still need to fulfill their Halloween destiny.

Plus, the oddly shaped pumpkins are super cool when you carve/paint them!

Fashionably yours,
Hillary
